Swimming pools are perfect for long, hot summer days. They’re a perfect way to help your kids cool down and escape those summer rays. Yet, swimming pools can also be dangerous and potentially life-threatening to your family. Keep in mind these safety tips while splashing around the swimming pool this summer.
Always be present:
Never leave a child unattended in or around the pool. Make sure you always have an adult or lifeguard present at all times; regardless of having someone that is a good swimmer, it is vital to have an alert, responsible adult, and a backup plan.
Take Swimming Lesson:
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, it is recommended that your children start swimming lessons around the age of 4. Introducing your kids to water at a younger age will help ease any fears they may have and help make them become more comfortable around water.
Follow the Rules:
If you are playing at a public pool, make sure you pay attention and respect the rules. A large majority of accidents that happen in public pool areas can be easily avoided by following the rules.
- Walking, not running. Running around a pool can easily lead to tripping and falling which can turn into a potential head injury.
- Always have a buddy. Encourage children never to swim alone or be around a pool area without having a buddy or friend to accompany them.
Hydration:
Spending time under the summer rays can lead to exhaustion and dehydration. Despite being surrounded by water, don’t forget to hydrate your body. Here are a few great options to make sure your kids stay hydrated.
Sunscreen:
Being in the water doesn’t protect you from the harsh rays of the sun. Don’t forget to lather on waterproof sunscreen while splashing around. Make sure to apply sunscreen to your children 30 minutes before they step outside and after each time they enter the water.
Swimming pools are a blast during the summer months; the perfect combination of fun and exercise for the whole family. But, keep in mind these safety tips to keep your children protected around the water.
