There is one activity that can be used to create endless possibilities…chalk! Chalk is an excellent way to encourage kids to use their imagination and engage in physical activity. Here are some activities you and your kids can do in the summer sun with chalk!
Make Your Own Chalk:
Chalk is super easy to make; all you need is three ingredients: plaster of Paris, water, and tempera paint. The paint can be anything from primary to neon, and the best part is choosing and mixing those colors. In order for the chalk to solidify, you will need to pour the mixture into something: a tube, a popsicle holder, or cookie cutters, just about any household object you want your chalk to take the form of. Obstacle Course:
Similar to the childhood game of hopscotch, but instead of skipping and throwing rocks, think of a variety of different activities children can do when they land on a spot. Touch your toes, twirl around, stomp and roar, woof like a dog. You can make it as far as the sidewalk goes or turn it into a race to see who reaches the finish line first.
Chalk Constellations:
This is a great activity that brings science to life! Learn about constellations and space exploration with your kids, then go outside and have them draw out their favorite constellations using chalk and rocks. Soon they will have created their own galaxy in the backyard. To continue further, have a camp out under the stars to see if you can identify the constellations.
Alphabet Shuffle
Help your kids write out the alphabet on the sidewalk and then have them act out an activity for each letter. You can make it more fun by choosing categories such as sounds, animals, or actions. Meow on M, act like a snack on S or kick on K. With this game, your kids are not only learning the alphabet but having fun doing so!
These are just a few of the endless possibilities you can create with just using chalk! Soak up that summer sun and bring your favorite activities to the sidewalk!
